In late 2001 I noted on a political discussion forum that we were seeing the beginning of World War III. The World Trade Center clean up was still going on and Afghanistan was under attack. Of course I was roundly chastised by most everyone else. How could I be so stupid, huh? World War III indeed. Why there hadn't been a nuclear weapon used yet. And that, I believe, showed the lack of imagination of my detractors. They had been conditioned for decades to think of a future World War III as requiring an exchange of nuclear weapons between world super powers. I guess it never occurred to any to do any critical thinking, to examine just what the term "world war" entailed.
Believe me, I took a lot of heat over my pronouncement back then, but I stood by it then, and I stand by it now. Nearly 17 years later and we can all see a continuing world war going on around us even if half of us refuse to concede that an existential struggle is going on between, well, let's just call it "us" and "them.". You can fill in the blanks for yourself as to who is "us" and who is "them."
The latest skirmish in WWIII took place last week in London. when, yet again, innocent civilians were mowed down in the streets. Sometimes you have to rely on media outside the U.S. to get a picture (both figuratively and literally) of what is going on, such as this account from the The Telegraph
:
I'm convinced at some point folks are going to have to wake up and realize this is it. As with the great life and death struggles that too place in the past, most notably 1914 - 1918, 1939 - 1945 so are we now involved in a struggle to the death. It's "us" or "them" but it can't be both.

Police fired an "unprecedented" 50 bullets to kill the three London Bridge terrorists because they believed the attackers were wearing suicide belts, the country's head of counter-terrorism said. Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said a member of the public also received a gunshot wound in the hail of bullets from the eight officers.
Seven people were killed and 48 injured in the attack on Saturday, with 21 fighting for their lives in hospital.
