I Want My Country Back

When I was born Harry Truman was still the President. I grew up in the Eisenhower/Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon decades. I remember JFK's televised funeral, the Beatles, and the Civil Rights movement. I lived through the landing on the moon, the Vietnam War and Wategate and all that has occurred since then; Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, Bush 43, Obama.
One thing that I know is that this is not the America where I grew up. It has changed a great deal, not necessarily for the better. In 1973 a Canadian newspaper/television commentator Gordon Sinclare wrote a strident defense of the United States against what he considered unfair foreign criticism. A short time later Canadian disk jockey Byron MacGregor recorded a reading of the editorial entitled "Americans."
The record reached #4 on the Billboard charts. Interestingly it was #1 in Canada. In the 40+ years since then much has changed. Airbus builds commercial airliners to rival Boeing. Japan builds fine cars, South Korea builds fine electronics, Finland builds fine mobile phones and on and on and on.
Once again, America is struggling and sadly our problems are of our own making. Where once we led the world due to our emphasis on hard work, entrepreneurship, and personal liberty, today we are sinking into a miasma of Orwellian 3rd world banana republic authoritarian socialist oligarchy.
Today there is open warfare on law and order, free enterprise, the Bill of Rights, and even on the Constitution itself. And that war is being led by the White House, the federal bureaucracy, by the federal courts and last, but not least, by the elitist ruling class in Congress, both Democrats and Republicans.
We are in for a long hot summer. Decisions to be made, matters to be settled this summer and later in the fall will have an existential impact on our future. I do so sincerely want to get my country back.
